Superman Back to "Normal" (3/9/98)
DC Comics, having decided, along with the rest of the world, that it's long past time, will be restoring Superman to his original, classic outfit and powers soon. This culminates several years of storylines in which Superman died, came back to life, turned into a freaky lightning bolt, then split into two beings, "Superman Red" and "Superman Blue".
In the new storyline, inspired in part by Time-Warner's acquisition of the Ziploc corporation, Superman Red and Superman Blue must join together to contain the evil of the "Millenium Giants". Red and Blue make Superman Purple, and this way, the world knows it is safe and the Millenium Giants will stay fresh, even after weeks in the freezer.
Having gotten the Ziploc joke out of the way, we here at TMC NewsBreak would like to take a moment to laugh derisively at Reuters for the following quoted description of the Millenium Giants. "monsters who want to celebrate the new century by destroying the planet". We can only hope that their bosses at Reuters punish them by suspending them for a day, so that they lose an entire week's pay.
And having laughed derisively at Reuters, let's take a second to laugh derisively at the Superman writers. At the risk of seeming redundant, allow me to quote (with corrections): "'Millennium Giants'--monsters who want to celebrate the new [millenium] by destroying the planet." Sources close to both TMC NewsBreak and DC Comics agree that in the annals of memorable supervillain concepts, the "Millenium Giants" will be nowhere to be found in about six months.
DC Comics hopes that the return to Superman's classic look will result in a slightly smaller fraction of the Superman-caring population completely ignoring the comics in favor of the astonishingly good animated series.
