Chapter Three: Rhapsody

Scene One: The Tucson Museum of Art
mgrasso> All right. If people want to check out last time's log:
mgrasso> And to summarize: going through the art museum, we encountered numerous chimera animated from the dreams of the artist Arthur McCoughey's young son, Peter.
mgrasso> We eventually found him hiding in the Egyptian exhibit, with the animated painting of his dad's protecting him. It was a mummy.
mgrasso> Gemma turned into a cat and commanded the mummy to stop, halting the furious battle.
mgrasso> We then coaxed the young boy out of his hiding place, and that's where we left off.
Julia> (which was very cool. :)

Sam> That was cool.

mgrasso> So, we're all standing around the Egypt exhibit. Gemma is a cat, and everyone else is just talking to the kid.

Jack> Have all the guests been cleared out?
mgrasso> Yes. You can communicate to the fae and chimera around, but not mortals. If the boy was enchanted, though...
Ingrid> (MeowMeow Kitty!)
Ingrid> Is he enchanted?
mgrasso> Jack: your earpiece has been transmitting status reports from the main gallery; the guests have cleared out, although there's still a police presence out front.
mgrasso> Ingrid: no, he is not.
Ingrid> But he could be...
mgrasso> Yes.
* Gemma paws at James' leg
* Ingrid asks the boy if he would like some Glamour gum.
mgrasso> Ingrid: the father taught the boy well about candy and strangers. Charisma + Persuasion, diff. 8.
James> /me bends down... yes kitty?
James> damn.
* Jack uses the radio to try and ascertain the father's whereabouts.
Jack> (Shades of Elian)
* Gemma waves a paw in the air and eyes James' hands

Jack> (quietly) I'd like to talk to Mr. McCoughey and find out what he knows about all this . . .
James> maybe you should let your cop buddies know that we found the kid.
* Gemma mrrrowls loudly
* Ingrid takes care to keep some distance between herself and the kitty.
mgrasso> (I'm sitting back and letting you guys come up with the next move on your own)
mgrasso> (No GM interference here :) )
* Gemma rubs up against Ingrid's legs, leaving a few cat hairs behind
* James laughs
* Gemma puffs her little tail up in the air and saunters back over to James
Jack> I guess you're right, James. I wonder whether it's safe to take Peter to the hospital.
Jack> These people he's afraid of might be expecting that.
James> Peter-do you want to go back with your dad, while we figure out what the furk, shit, uh, I mean, damn, um, what the heck is up about those people you told us about?
James> how about setting up a body gaurd, could you do that Jack?
Jack> I think so...
mgrasso> The boy stares blankly at James. "I'd... I'd like to see my daddy, yes, if I could. I don't know what's going on."
* Jack radios one of his men about setting up a police escort for the boy.
mgrasso> Jack: Manipulation + Police Proc., diff. 5.
* Gemma quietly leaves the room
James> that's what were're trying to figure out now kid, our bigest concern right now is keeping you and your dad safe.

mgrasso> OK. Your persuasive ways allows you to get a cruiser to take the boy to the hospital, with full police guard.
Jack> (to the group) shall we accompany him?
Ingrid> Yes, please. I'd like to get out of this weird place.
* Gemma returns, back in her human form
James> maybe. then we can talk to the father- if he's up to it, and find out more about what ever it is this poor kid is scared shitless of.

* James smile
Jack> My thoughts exactly, James.
* Gemma smiles back
* Gemma eyes Ingrid's stockings and smiles even more
mgrasso> All right. The boy follows you out of the art museum. All the paintings are normal now. Of course, the modern sculpture is still bent and broken from Jack attacking it/falling on it. :)
* Jack whistles innocently as they pass it.
mgrasso> You're out in front of the museum, and three police cruisers are here, lights flashing.
James> ohhh... how grand.
mgrasso> "Officer Duran," nods a trooper waiting with the door open.
* Jack gets in the cruiser with the boy.
James> who do you want to ride with Peter?
mgrasso> It seems the boy trusts Jack most of all.
mgrasso> He's all but holding his hand as the two of them get in the back seat of the police car.
James> oh shit!
Gemma> Shit?
James> guys hold on a sec... I gotta go get my Jacket and tie!
mgrasso> You can hear Peter say, "Wow, I've never been in a police car before! Can we have the siren on..." as the door shuts.
James> those are rented
mgrasso> (Mellie, I need the name of a downtown hospital, stat!)
James> /Me makes a mad dash back in the building "be right back"
James> (argh)
* Ingrid smiles after James.
mgrasso> Mr. McCoughey is at University Medical Center.
mgrasso> (thanks, mellie!)
* James comes back, rumpled jacket in hand
Gemma> All those lovely medical students having their way with him...

mgrasso> The cop car leads the way. Occasionally, the siren goes on for short bursts. You can see Peter bouncing up and down happily in the back seat.

Scene Two: University Medical Center
mgrasso> So, the drive over to the hospital is uneventful except for the massive server crash. :)
Gemma> (hehe)
Ingrid> heh!
James> (oh good.)
mgrasso> You are now at the hospital. Police escort you to a room, and you see a doctor standing outside, talking to another police officer. Jack recognizes him as one of the others who were on detail with him.
* Jack approaches, flashing his badge quickly.
Jack> What can you tell us?
mgrasso> "Jack, this is Dr. Vashram. He's taking care of Mr. McCoughey." The officer notices the boy behind you. "Um, one of you'd better take the boy somewhere." he whispers to you.

James> well, Jack?
Jack> Peter, would you like to go for a walk outside?
mgrasso> Peter looks up... way up, at Jack. "Sure!" He seems eager to go anywhere with Jack.
James> oh come on!
* James looks exhasperated
mgrasso> Jack and Peter walk out, and, afterwards, the doctor and the officer come over to you.
Jack> Wait for me over by the door Peter, I'll be right there.
mgrasso> Oops. My bad.
mgrasso> That's a better idea.
Jack> (to the group) Find out what's wrong with the father.
Jack> I think this doctor's a shrink.
Ingrid> Me too.
James> can't we just drop him here? we arn't a furking babysiting service
mgrasso> Dr. Vashram and the officer are already on their way over.
Ingrid> I'll talk to him.
* Gemma sighs
* Jack will take the boy outside.
mgrasso> Dr. Vashram is an Indian gentleman, about 50 years of age, with short grey hair.
mgrasso> "Yes, you are... acquaintances of Mr. McCoughey?"
James> so whats the diagnosis doc?
Ingrid> Dr. Vashram? I'm Ingrid Kane.
Ingrid> Can you say what's wrong with him?
mgrasso> "Ah yes. Very well, Ms. Kane. I shall tell you of his condition. Mr. McCoughey has suffered a profound psychotic break."
Ingrid> Oh my.
mgrasso> "You are very lucky he did not lash out at his surroundings. I have him in his room in four-point restraints."
James> shiit
mgrasso> "Yes, it is veeeeery serious. Does the boy have anyone to stay with, I must ask you?"
mgrasso> "For if he does not, he will have to go with Social Services."
Ingrid> Of course he does, Doctor. He can stay with me.
James> no- the boy doesn't have anywhere to stay.
mgrasso> "All right, do you have some documentation of a relationship with the boy?"
mgrasso> (James, I'm ruling Ingrid got that out before you could)
mgrasso> (That's the first time something like that happened :) )
James> (that's fine- I'll say it anyway)
mgrasso> (hah, okay)
mgrasso> Dr. Vashram looks at Ingrid and James quizzically. "I am not understanding... does he stay with you or not, Ms. Kane?"
Ingrid> No I don't, but I think he'd be better off with someone he knows. So yes, he will stay with me.
James> no, he doesn't
* James glares at ingrid
James> may we have a moment doctor?
Ingrid> Pardon me.
* Ingrid walks away with James.
Ingrid> What is your deal?
mgrasso> "Certainly. The man is... as you might say, not going anywhere in a hurry." Dr. Vashram laughs creepily.
James> what the furk are you doing?
mgrasso> (where's Gemma?)
Gemma> (tied up in phone land, but back now)
Gemma> 9argh, brbr again)
mgrasso> (okay.)
James> we can't guarantee to keep the kid safe while we look for who or what did this to his father- the kid isn't our problem- he'll be okay for a couple of nights with ss.
Ingrid> And you think *they* can keep them safe?
Ingrid> Maybe Jack knows someone in SS who can.
James> that's what *they* are supposed to do- I don't think any one is going to get him in his sleep... the but if we took him with us... I mean shit Ingrid-
James> maybe, we could ask him.
James> Ingrid- one question.
Ingrid> What's that?
James> why didn't you hocus pocus up some Id, a picture of the kid, something?
Ingrid> Hocus pocus? That's not what I do, James.
* Ingrid laughs
James> okay, sure... all i know is that you put on your make up and I looked like the pizza guy.
Ingrid> Yeah, but that was different. At that point we hadn't even found the kid yet.
Ingrid> Anyway, what are we going to do now?
James> oookay... do you even think linearly?
* James shakes his head
* Gemma stiffles a laugh
James> any way-
mgrasso> You all see Jack and Peter coming back into the hospital hallway, and they are accompanied by Douglass mac Liam.
* Ingrid smiles.
Ingrid> Nice to see you again, Daniel.
mgrasso> And you, Ingrid. We have much to discuss at the mission.
*** spudboy ( has joined #Changeling-Tucson
mgrasso> Douglass peers at the doctor near the hospital room.
mgrasso> "We need to take the boy somewhere, unless you think bringing him along Enchanted will serve as well."
James> what's this "we"?
James> Gem, did you hear a we?
Ingrid> Well, I could certainly try enchanting him again now that he's settled down.
Gemma> Not at all, James.
mgrasso> Douglass leaps towards James and grabs him by his shirt.
mgrasso> Would you like to dodge?
Ingrid> (oooh!)
Gemma> Back off, you thug!
James> I thought I heard a we, but I could be mistaken, since there is no we... not with douggie here anyway?
James> yeah, I'll dodge
mgrasso> Ok, Dex + Dodge, diff. 6
* Gemma rolls her eyes at Douglass

* James spits at him
Gemma> Oh, someone shove this man off of his high horse.
* Ingrid jumps forward to take Douglass's arm.
James> thats what I think of your lords- atleast I have some honor
Ingrid> Hey, both of you, stop it.
Ingrid> I think this fight can wait until later, hmm? Don't we have other things to be doing right now?
mgrasso> A couple of the cops pay close interest in this melee.

mgrasso> Douglass backs off, seemingly drained.
mgrasso> "I... I need you. All of you. More importantly, the County needs you."
* Jack waves the cops along "nothing to see, it's under control."
Ingrid> Do tell us why, Douglass?
mgrasso> "There are... fae practicing Rhapsody about. They did that to him!" He points towards Arthur's room.
mgrasso> Peter looks confused, and on the verge of tears.
* Ingrid kneels down to put her arm around Peter.
mgrasso> "You... none of you know what Rhapsody is, do you?"
Ingrid> I think I do... tell us, though.
* Jack shakes his head no.
James> hey pete- you want to play with something? don't be surprised though, okay? (James digs a palm pilot out of his pants, and infuses it with a pt of glamor)
mgrasso> Douglass sighs, and speaks to everyone, as Peter pays attention to James.
* James hands it to Peter, and then smiles... and says "be brave, we're going to help your daddy"
mgrasso> "Rhapsody is the most damaging form of harvesting Glamour from mortals," Douglass eyes Gemma and James, "for it destroys their creativity... forever. It leaves them a hollow husk, and sometimes can kill them or turn them insane."
mgrasso> "That's what happened here. We know that there may be as many as three fae involved in systematically destroying Arthur there."
James> is there anyway to help him now?
mgrasso> "No." Douglass sighs. "Such is the legacy of Rhapsody. He will be forever ruined."
James> poor pisher
mgrasso> "Such is the legacy of rampant Unseelieism."
Ingrid> How horrifying.
mgrasso> Douglass smirks a bit smugly, but ultimately hollowly.
* James gets up in dougs face
* Ingrid shudders
James> you want to go again?
Gemma> Yet somehow more appealing than rampant Seelieism.
mgrasso> Douglass says, "You don't approve of this, do you, young nocker?"
* Ingrid rolls her eyes
mgrasso> "This... Rhapsody?"
mgrasso> "Destroying a Dreamer for eternity?"
* Jack looks with horrified sorrow at Peter.

James> it goes against my don't shit where you eat policy, if that's what you mean...
mgrasso> Douglass simply raises an eyebrow and says, "We need you to come back to the freehold and help us. The Count has agreed to put you up for the night." Douglass observes Ingrid's chimerical wounds, "It looks like you need some rest."
mgrasso> You hear Peter crying as Jack approaches him.
Ingrid> Does the boy come with us?
Jack> Peter, I'm so sorry.
Jack> What? What do you mean?
mgrasso> Douglass looks at the boy, and says, "He might as well now. He won't remember anything in the morning anyway."
* Ingrid looks at Peter sadly.
James> then don't tell him now- he will find out in the real world- It'll make it easier for now!
Jack> What?
Jack> Everyone, something's up with Peter. Peter what is it?
Ingrid> What's he saying?
Jack> I think he's enchanted. I think maybe he can see me.
mgrasso> Peter looks at Jack, then at Ingrid. "Why do you look so... oh, no..." and he continues crying.
James> oh yeah- he can.
* James walks over
James> pete? you gonna be okay?
mgrasso> Peter looks at James. "Um... I..." and he goes back to playing with the Palm Pilot.
* James tossles his hair
mgrasso> He seems completely lost in the Pilot.
James> what's he playing?
mgrasso> Douglass looks at James. "Well, he's definitely placid now."
mgrasso> "Let's take him back to the freehold."
mgrasso> "Ms. Kane!" Dr. Vashram calls over to you.
James> (what's he playing?)
Ingrid> Yes, Doctor?
mgrasso> James: it seems to be some game with multicolored blobs eating each other.
mgrasso> "What will happen to the boy, have you decided?"

Ingrid> Oh yes, Doctor. This is Peter's uncle Daniel. He'll be staying with him tonight.
mgrasso> "I... see"

James> hey, I was thinking that if we all clap our hands and believe in fairies, the sain will be sain again.
* James is ever sardonic

mgrasso> Douglass leads the convoy back to San Xavier del Bac.
mgrasso> Jack and Peter ride with Ingrid.
mgrasso> Douglass leads the way on the back of his motorcycle/trusty steed.
* Gemma mocks Douglass' motorcycle with James throughout the ride to the mission
mgrasso> Remember, it's a powerful dove-grey stallion in the Dreaming.
James> then we mock doug for his pretensiousness
* Ingrid admires Doug's steed. (*snortle*)
Gemma> Either way, he's mocked. Mocked!
Gemma> Ingrid: How freudian of you.
Ingrid> Meow. :)
* Jack just sits looking sadly at the boy.
mgrasso> Back at the freehold, the mission is a hive of activity. Almost every fae in the Tucson area is milling about with the news, and an official court has been called for tonight.
* James looks flirtatiously at Gemma.
James> "you know, you are just about the sexiest cat I've ver seen"
mgrasso> You exit your cars and enter the mission.

Scene Three: The Freehold
* Gemma just laughs
mgrasso> The main hall of the freehold is just about as busy as it was the night that Ingrid, Douglass, Gemma, and James met each other, on Imbolg.
mgrasso> Multiple conversations melt into one another and chimera leap and dance around the walls and corners of the freehold's main hall.

*** Ingrid is now known as Artemisia
*** Jack is now known as Rolando
mgrasso> James sits down in a corner somewhere, entertained by a sentient ball of yarn and a tiny 4-inch tall silver dwarf.
mgrasso> Not James, Peter. Sorry.
Aranth> hahahaha!
Artemisia> hah!
* Aranth follows peter- can I have the video game? you can Have it back later?
Aranth> (James likes to keep track of his stuff)

Aranth> you know, I'll never understand her- (he says to a floating chimera or something)
* Aranth smiles
mgrasso> Solangia wanders over to the corner of the room.
mgrasso> Is anyone going over there?
* Aranth stands there feeling stupidly alone for a moment, then walks back over to the boy
Aranth> (still keeping an eye on Sol)
mgrasso> The boy is rapt with his new chimerical friends. They're flocking around him like moths to a flame.

mgrasso> Solangia is standing, conversing with a fox pooka.
mgrasso> Analise is a fox pooka; she has very short-cropped black hair in her mortal seeming, touching with red highlights. Her fae mien shows long deep crimson hair on her head, sharp, prominent eyebrows, and a long, flicking red furry tail. Her voile is a deep bronze kimono.
Aranth> sure bet babe
mgrasso> Analise sizes you all up.
Solangia> Analise, this is Aranth. And some others.
mgrasso> "Anyway, as I was saying, it sounds like they're after Tara."
mgrasso> "The supposedly evil satyr, who Rhapsodized your poor little mortal?"
Solangia> Well, they're always after someone, aren't they?
Solangia> (who said that? her?)
mgrasso> Yeah.
mgrasso> "She's a friend of mine." Analise says.
* Rolando looks a bit dubious.
Aranth> dum dum dum!
mgrasso> Analise eyebrows the troll.
mgrasso> "What don't you believe?" Analise flutters her eyelashes.
* Artemisia looks frostily at the pooka.
mgrasso> "Everything? A little bit of it? Somewhere in between?" She smiles.
* Rolando looks a bit taken aback
Aranth> really, is she a "friend" or a friend friend
Aranth> ?
mgrasso> "Oh, sure, we're all liars, aren't we, Solangia, dear? The whole bunch of us pooka." Analisa clucks her tongue.
Solangia> Indeed. I'm telling you the truth when I say we're all liars.
