Gates Off The Hook (4/9/98)

The U.S. Government today withdrew its entire anti-trust case against Microsoft today, but warned that it could reinstate the case in a few years.

"We didn't want to do this," said the attorney in charge of the case, "but we had no choice. Our entire case against Microsoft was lost yesterday in a Word 97 crash

Apparently, the crash took out the files, then, when the files were loaded again from a backup copy, the same crash took those down too. Due to a conflict between Windows and the Justice Department's printer, hard copies of the case are unavailable.

"Basically, we'll have to start over from scratch," he said.

When asked if the Justice Department would continue to use Word 97, the attorney said, "What choice do we have? It's the only game in town."
