Repreive for MST3K?
Mystery Science Theater 3000, canceled in December, may not be gone after
all. Doug Herzog, who became Comedy Central president and CEO in July
after 11 years at MTV, says the cancellation of the seven-year-old show was
based on a lack of communication. "The definitive conversation never really
took place," he explains. Herzog is sending the cable channel's programming
vice president to meet with MST3K's Minneapolis-based producers in
mid-February to discuss whether new shows will be created for next season.
(Only six were done this season, compared with 24 the previous year.) "We'll
make some kind of offer," he says, "and then the ball will be in their court."
Herzog admits that MST3K's avid fans made him take another look at the
show. For his part, MST3K producer Jim Mallon says he'd be happy
with six to 10 new shows. Meanwhile, new episodes will run through March;
"Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie" will open in April; "The MST3K
Amazing Colossal Episode Guide," a paperback describing all 132 shows, is due
in March; and the second MST3K convention will be held in Minneapolis
over Labor Day weekend.
