Titan Tron Live (Jakks) Until this year, all wrestling toys sucked. Big-time. No joints. Awful faces. Then Toy Biz got the WCW license, and started churning out toys that not only looked like who they were supposed to be, but they moved, too! It was a revelation. And Jakks Pacific, holder of the increasingly lucrative WWF license, decided it was time to stop work on number eight in their series of increasingly hideous alleged Chyna figures, and actually get on the goddamned ball. Hence, Titan-Tron Live. A series of figures that boasts improved sculpting. Improved articulation. And interaction with the Titan-Tron Playset. And it's a good first step. So far. Except when they screw it up, of course. The figures? Well, there's a new Rock, who is better than any previous Rock, in the sense that you can see that he's supposed to be the Rock. Plus, he's got wrists, knees, and sorta ankles that don't move much at all. He's wearing a hideously ugly outfit, comes with sunglasses that don't stay on (and I believe I've since lost), and a stupid stand. The paint job is sloppy, the plastic is cheap, and the figure overall represents a new Jakks high-water mark. Mankind looks decent as well, with the mask and the shirt and the tie and the thing. No accessories, and another crappy stand, and his neck doesn't move at all 'cause of his hair, but, again, a pretty decent figure by Jakks standards. And then, there's the playset. Which almost boosted the overall score to a 4. Girders. Lights. Vinyl banners that hang from the sides. Fake TV screens that light up. And the fact that it recognizes the figures you put in it, so that when/if you make contact between the metal contacts in the figure's left foot and the metal strips in the base of the playset, the toy booms out with the wrestler's entrance music. And I mean -booms-. This bugger is loud. Plus, it comes with a Vince McMahon figure, which, like every other Vince figure, looks more like Vince wishes he looked than like he actually does look, but he's got the added joints too, so that's a bonus. |
