Camp Sunny Side Up (Liam Lynch/Matt Crocco) Matt Crocco and Liam Lynch, the creators of the truly brilliant sock puppet show Sifl and Olly, released a CD of musical and comedy material for their fans, called Camp Sunny Side Up. Culled from early comedy tapes the duo recorded and unaired material from the Sifl and Olly Show, Matt and Liam sing the kind of songs that bring a smile to your face, even if you've had the shittiest day ever. Liam and Matt come off like a kinder, gentler Tenacious D on this CD, mixing weird lyrics with melodically-aware minute-thirty music. Standouts include all the Sifl and Olly material ("Performance Art," "Oh, When I'm Dead," "Trucks and Cars") new stuff ("Electric Vomit," "Captain Kirk's New Shoes," "Ghost Cop") and Liam's truly eerie evocation of the weird lyrics and voice of Icelandic chanteuse Bjork ("I wrestled an idea/and threw it in a box"). There's some filler, of course: any comedy music album with 35 tracks is bound to have some. At its best, though, Liam and Matt's pop and folk sensibilities are reminiscent of Lou Barlow's low-fi tape-recorder efforts with Sebadoh and the Acoustic Sentridoh. Get it while you can at Sifl and Olly's Cyberspace Station; it's got a limited release and won't be around forever. |
