3/5 Generation Girls: Blaine (Mattel)

Ah, the fine people behind Barbie. Not only do they attempt to hook into trends from several years ago with their Generation Girl line of hip, international teensters, but they decided that one of the Girls should be... a Guy.

Enter Blaine. With his DiCaprio hair, his silver jacket, his tank-top with karate robot iron-on decal, he is the apotheosis of cool. And, most importantly, he's a DJ.

Yes, in yet another appropriation of hip-hop culture by middle-class white America, Blaine comes with a record box, some funky platters, and a double-turntable DJ setup. None of the albums actually -say- "Puff Daddy" on them, but I'd lay odds that if the whole thing, in some kind of bad Mannequin sequel, the whole thing came to life, one of the songs on one of the albums would be the Puff "Every Breath You Take" song.

Like the whole Generation Girl line, the stuff's put together surprisingly well, and, by Barbie standards, there's a bit of a more realistic take on the accessories and clothing. And it's GLORIOUSLY tacky. Recommended for those who feel toys should not only thrill the soul, but terrify your friends and family.
