5/5 Angel (WB)

"Angel: The Spinoff" has been an apporaching reality for the past year, and some people feel that the knowledge of the upcoming series has tainted the third season of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Whether that is true or not, Buffy has gone to college and Angel now has his own series.

Angel is not Buffy. There are shades of every single private detective show ever broadcast on network television, and almost direct parallels with Forever Knight (especially in the fast motion segues between scenes). The series is much darker in tone, and those who hated the soap opera elements of Buffy can rejoice because they don't appear to be included in this incarnation.

The opening episode, "City of" set the stage for the series: Angel left Sunnydale to atone for past sins in Los Angeles, Cordelia is a struggling actress who really wants to do good and fight evil (something that I've always suspected), another mysterious demon named Doyle is their link to the Big Giant Head, and a law firm is pulling strings to keep the bad guys out of trouble.

Add in some very unexpected plot twists and you've got quite the potential.

We'll see if they develop it to the fullest. If creator Joss Whedon's past work is any indication, they will.
