Exhibit 12 almost didn't make the cut. Like many of the exhibits that were tossed out during remodeling, there was no actual example on-site of the stupidity, just an off-site link to something that's now gone forever. However, we're leaving #12 in, because of its intrinsic historic value.
On August 12, 1998, the Moron Shrine added its first institutional listing to its ranks. For the first time, a stupid company, rather than a stupid individual, got the nod:
We're gonna break the boundaries a bit, stretch the definitions, think outside the box, and award a Special Achievement In Moronitude award to DejaNews for creating their own hierarchy of Usenet and allowing people to create newsgroups, or, as they like to call them, "forums", at the drop of a hat.
And that hat kept dropping. There was brought unto this earth a huge, scary list of lame forums, all with a single welcome message in them. Hundreds of them. I'm sure there were thousands total by the time Deja gave up the ghost. Brings a chill to the spine, really.
To this day, messages from the deja. hierarchy are archived at Google, who bought out Deja's archives in '01. The company may be gone, but the digital stain remains.
